House Restaurant in Las Casas B+B Hotel:

Nestled between La Plazuela—which is one of the trendiest walking streets in Cuernavaca—and el Palacio de Cortés is House Restuarant (located inside Las Casas B+B Hotel). Rated top-5 in all categories on Trip Advisor, this hotel perhaps has the most modern menu in all of Cuernavaca—and with stellar service to match.

restaurants in Cuernavaca

Casa Hidalgo:

One of the most famous restaurants in Cuernavaca, Casa Hidalgo is located in the building right across the street from the Palacio de Cortés—which was originally an 18th-century pharmacy. With a view of the entire Plaza de Armas, the location is the romantic embodiment of the Mexican Colonial Period. Of all the best restaurants in Cuernavaca, Casa Hidalgo holds the most-centralized location in the whole city.

In this regard, Casa Hidalgo puts forth a genuine effort to venerate the indigenous people whose Temple to Tlahuica was torn down to construct Cortés’ Palace, which is the oldest conserved, continental-era civil structure in the whole of the American Continent. Serving a modern twist on traditional Mexican classics, you can find some truly innovative dishes that still manage to seem authentic. Whether you are interested in breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you will adore Casa Hidalgo.

Tips: Their pechuga Tlaxcalteca is one of my favorite dishes. Also, don’t miss out on the tacos de salmon al pastor.

Las Mañanitas:

When you think of the best restaurants in Cuernavaca, immediately Las Mañanitas comes to mind. Located in Cuernavaca’s most famous hotel, this former hacienda sets the mood with one of the most impressive gardens in the entire city—certainly the most impressive garden on this list—which boasts a collection of exotic birds that freely roam the grounds. Enjoy Mexican classics with a French flair. This fine-dining experience is sure to make an impression.

Tips: Las Mañanitas is famous for their tacos de gusanos de maguey—which is the fried larvae of the moth that infests the agave plant. This delicacy is pricey, but delicious and highly recommended.

Venancio:

One of the top up-and-coming restaurants in Cuernavaca, Venancio has recently changed locations to the heart of Vista Hermosa—one of the nicest areas in Cuernavaca. This Spanish restaurant is as authentic as it gets, forgoing the Mexican fusion for an authentic taste of the Iberian Peninsula. If you are interested in a restaurant that provides a warm, inclusive atmosphere with absolutely delicious food, then you will love Venancio.

Tips: Try the croquetas de jamon serrano, they are to die for. Also, if you want a truly Spanish experience, you will love Venancio on the weekends when the restaurant hires musicians to serenade the crowd. They put on quite the show!

El Madrigal:

El Madrigal is perhaps the best of all the restaurants in Cuernavaca. It was founded by the long-time executive chef of Las Mañanitas, who broke off to pursue his own project—and this mother influence has not been lost. Located on one of the trendiest streets in Cuernavaca, El Madrigal is another restaurant in Cuernavaca with a spectacular garden to further punctuate this aspect of Cuernavacan culture.

The classic Mexican dishes at Madrigal are elevated to a higher standard, like their Carnitas de Pato or their Cochinita Pibil. Complementing these dishes are classic continental dishes—like their incredible selection of pasta dishes—for those who are interested in a more-traditional meal.

Tips: Try the pescado papalo if you like seafood. It is one of the specialties of the house. They also have escamoles if you’re feeling adventurous.

Tamuz:

Water features complete this restaurant’s ambiance to provide for a charming atmosphere so reminiscent of Cuernavaca’s garden culture. Tamuz serves some of the region’s best Israeli cuisine. Levantine classics are given a Mexican twist, making Tamuz one of the best restaurants in Cuernavaca.

Tips: If you’re a seafood lover, you can’t pass up the salmon in a creamy dill sauce.

Rincón del Bife:

This Argentinian steakhouse has been at the forefront of Cuernavaca’s food scene for decades. It was my grandparent’s favorite restaurant. You will find some of the highest quality cuts of beef in all of Cuernavaca. Also, whether you like sausage, chicken, or fish, their grill is on par with any of the best in Argentina.

Rincón del Bife almost always has live music. Bands playing boleros are commonplace almost every night. This in combination with the tropical plants and the water features helps to create an atmosphere so reminiscent of Argentina.

Tips: The empanadas are incredible. Don’t miss out on ordering these delicious morsels. You won’t regret it.

La Princesa:

No restaurant guide to Cuernavaca would be complete without mentioning La Princesa. This is my favorite taquería La Princesa and I believe they have the best tacos al pastor on the planet. Therefore it deserves to be on the list of best restaurants in Cuernavaca.

La Princesa is a bit of an institution in Cuernavaca. Everything is made from scratch, including the best tortillas I have ever had. They also serve their tacos with a myriad of salsas. Don’t miss out on their salsa de aceite.

Tips: If you show up on a weekday during the day, they have the fryers on and you can get their fried quesadilla. This is one of the most indulgent foods I have ever eaten.

*It is just a simple taquería, there are no reservations necessary.

Anticavilla:

Of all the restaurants in Cuernavaca that I have listed—or even visited—my favorite restaurant in Cuernavaca is Anticavilla. Built from stones collected from an abandoned monastery in Puebla, this restaurant and boutique hotel has some of the most unique decór in all of Cuernavaca. The lounge looks right out of a Bond film, and the garden—though small—seems untouched by time. Overall, it creates a lovely atmosphere.

Anticavilla boasts stellar service whether you are a repeat customer or not. Their menu is Mexican cuisine fused with a modern Italian flair, featuring only the freshest ingredients.

Tips: You can’t miss out on the marlin tostadas if you like seafood. They are a personal favorites, as are the stuffed avocados with a touch of mezcal. Wednesday nights, they typically have live jazz music.
